Anodizing is an electrochemical process that converts the metal surface into a decorative, durable, and corrosion-resistant anodic oxide finish. The preferred material for anodizing is aluminum; however, materials such as magnesium and titanium can also be anodized as well.

Anodic films can be much stronger and more adherent than most types of metal plating and painting. This makes them less likely to crack and peel from aging and wear. However they are more vulnerable to cracking from thermal stress.

Many anodized aluminum parts are typically found in aircraft and architectural components, as well as home appliances, sporting goods, and electronics.
